Syracuse football coach Fran Brown described his strange ritual of not showering or sleeping with his wife when he loses a game.
Brown's team lost 37-31 I went to Boston University on the weekend. The coach hosted a press conference on Monday. At that press conference, members of the media asked Brown exactly what he was preparing for between Saturday's loss and Monday's press conference.
Brown said he starts watching game footage over and over again as soon as his family is asleep, then moves on to the next opponent's footage. The coach then explained his habit of not taking a bath after losing.
“Honestly, it's like a ritual when you lose,” he began. “I didn't even take a shower until early this morning. I just get mad and brush my teeth. I'm like, 'I don't deserve to use soap. I don't deserve to do that.'”
“If I lose, I won't be able to take a shower or sleep in my bed.”
coach brown explained His habit stems not only from feeling like he let his players down, but also from staying up all night to annoy his wife when he loses.
“I'm focused on getting back up and making sure the players understand mentally that I let them down. They didn't do that,” Brown said. “You wake up all night, especially when you lose. You wake up like, damn, that really happened. … And you just move on.”
The 42-year-old continued to reveal his protocol, saying he wouldn't be able to sleep in his bed with his wife if Syracuse loses, probably because of the smell.
“Win, lose or draw, I have a process that I follow all week. The only thing is my wife…If I lose, I can't sleep in my bed because I can't take a shower.”
“I'm just brushing my teeth because I have to, so don't tell me my breath stinks,” he continued.
Brown, who has a record of 6-3, said he will only have a limited number of weekends without a shower, but he is focused on Syracuse's next game against the University of California.
The coach said he was thinking about the historic nature of the game considering the two teams haven't played each other since. 1968.
But Brown will continue with his mantra that “winners get washed.”
“You need to earn the rights to certain things, and then the winners will be washed away. The losers will just have to wait a little while,” he concluded.
