Congressman Reveals Absence Due to Health Issues
The congressman from New Jersey, who missed over 140 votes, has finally shed light on his extended absence from congressional duties, attributing it to a “medical issue.”
Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. last participated in a vote on March 5, but then vanished for three months without a clear explanation.
In a speech delivered on the floor of Congress, Kean disclosed that he had been diagnosed with depression and had been advised to undergo hospitalization for treatment.
“A few months ago, due to health concerns, I was hospitalized for tests,” he shared. “I never anticipated this would result in a prolonged stay. I have since been diagnosed with depression.”
Kean elaborated that his doctor recommended hospitalization for treatment of his condition.
“They informed me that this was the most effective path to recovery, but I must admit I was hesitant. I didn’t think I had the time to take off. Like many, I thought I could simply push through,” he noted. “Nonetheless, I chose to adhere to the doctor’s advice, even though I didn’t foresee a long duration of treatment.”
When asked in April for specifics on his absence, Kean referred to “personal medical issues.” On Tuesday, he expressed a desire for an earlier release, but stated his treatment had taken longer than expected.
“As is the case for over 48 million Americans dealing with this illness, there isn’t a set timeline for recovery,” he remarked. “It’s just about making progress one day at a time.”
During his absence, Kean won a substantial re-election campaign.
He reiterated his sentiments on social media, saying, “I’m a private individual, so it was challenging for me to open up about my experiences. However, if sharing my story helps just one person feel less alone, then it is worth it,” he wrote.
In closing, Kean expressed gratitude, stating, “I am truly thankful for the prayers, kindness, and support I’ve received.”
