ICE Officers Required to Wear Body Cameras During Vehicle Stops

According to Tom Homan, the White House Border Czar, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has mandated that its officers wear at least one body camera during vehicle stops.

This requirement comes after the White House confirmed recent plans to resume ICE’s vehicle stops, following a temporary suspension of non-urgent stops, which President Donald Trump reversed shortly thereafter.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that both Trump and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin are united on the idea that traffic stops are crucial for ICE’s deportation efforts.

“They exonerate more law enforcement than they convict, and I want officers to wear body cameras because I want the American people to see what the officers saw when they took that action,” Homan mentioned in an interview.

“Vehicle stops are a necessary tool that ICE agents need in order to continue their deportation campaign of the worst of the worst illegal alien criminals from our country,” Leavitt added. “Regarding body cameras, I know there have been some recent questions. Over half of all ICE field offices are now equipped with them.”

Leavitt noted that earlier delays in providing body cameras to agents were due to a funding shutdown led by Democrats.

“ICE will ensure each arrest team has an individual wearing a body camera,” a DHS spokesperson reported. “Making sure all our ICE law enforcement officers have body cameras nationwide is a top priority for DHS, particularly with the rise in attacks against our officers, including a more than 1,300% increase in assaults and a 3,300% increase in vehicle attacks.”

This recent directive came amidst growing public scrutiny, especially following incidents where ICE officers used lethal force in Texas and Maine. Initially, Mullin had ordered a temporary pause on non-urgent vehicle stops after discussions with Senator Susan Collins, who voiced concerns about the situations.
