ICE Captures Suspected South American Burglar

Federal agents have arrested a suspected undocumented burglar from South America, who is believed to have committed a series of violent armed robberies in Texas. The group primarily targeted small business owners throughout the state.

In one disturbing incident, surveillance footage showed two masked men armed with handguns chasing a terrified resident inside their home, where the victim was assaulted by the assailants.

ICE has charged four individuals in connection with these break-ins, resulting in two convictions.

Details on the Violent Crimes

Authorities suggest the suspects are linked to a group known as the South American Theft Group (SATG). This organized network mainly consists of foreign nationals from South America, traveling across the U.S. to carry out robberies and thefts, often aiming at affluent homes and businesses.

Reportedly, the group employs encrypted messaging apps and burner phones, along with proactive neighborhood surveillance to identify potential victims. The stolen items often include high-value jewelry, luxury watches, and cash.

According to ICE, most members of the group are in the country illegally or reside with expired visas.

Conviction of a Notable Suspect

One man, Joel Harrison Espinal Cantaleo, a 38-year-old undocumented immigrant from Honduras, was sentenced in September to over 11 years in federal prison due to his involvement in multiple armed home invasions in Texas communities like Irving, Cedar Hill, and Frisco. Victims in these incidents reported being pistol-whipped, restrained, and coerced into handing over their cash and valuables.

“This 11-year sentence sends a clear message that we will not tolerate violent crimes threatening public safety,” stated Travis Pickard, a Special Agent in Charge at Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). He emphasized the gravity of the impact on small businesses and community safety and affirmed ongoing cooperation with local, state, and federal partners to address violent crime.

Legal Proceedings and Future Actions

Three suspects have been indicted following the filing of a federal case with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sherman, while a fourth suspect has been sentenced to life in prison by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office for separate charges. There are still ongoing investigations into two other cases.

ICE has also indicated plans to ensure that Espinal-Cantaleo is transferred to federal immigration custody upon completing his prison term, with intentions to pursue his deportation afterward.
