ICE chief promises to increase presence in Boston following Mayor Wu's commitment to sanctuary policies

Boston’s Immigration Tensions Heat Up

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has pledged to increase the presence of immigration agents in Boston following comments from Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu supporting the city’s sanctuary policies and her commitment to oppose the Trump administration’s efforts to enforce immigration laws more strictly.

In a local radio interview, Lyons warned that more ICE agents would be dispatched to Boston to address what he sees as public safety concerns linked to undocumented immigrants. He referenced “Operation Patriot,” initiated by the Trump administration, which had resulted in over 1,000 arrests in the Boston area last March.

“We’re going to keep adapting our approach in Boston,” he explained. “Our mission continues as long as these sanctuary city policies fail to ensure safety in the community.” He believes such policies create environments where criminal activity can flourish.

Lyons highlighted that under Operation Patriot, ICE had focused on apprehending criminal immigrants who had been released into the community, emphasizing that such actions were crucial given the recent trends of releasing individuals deemed as risks.

The operation, conducted in May, involved collaboration among various law enforcement agencies and led to the arrest of nearly 1,500 individuals with serious criminal backgrounds, including violent offenders.

“As long as these criminal aliens remain free to commit more crimes, we need to take timely action,” Lyons said, commenting on ongoing challenges faced by local authorities due to policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy recently set a deadline for cities that obstruct federal immigration cooperation to comply or face consequences. In letters sent to several mayors and governors, she asserted that failing to cooperate could lead to legal actions against those officials.

Despite these pressures, Wu publicly dismissed Bondy’s demands during a press conference, labeling them as political maneuvers. “Boston follows the law, and we will not cower to federal intimidation,” she stated emphatically. Wu reiterated her belief in the city’s commitment to its values and the safety of its residents.

In a follow-up, her office conveyed Wu’s commitment to uphold local laws while advocating for community safety, expressing pride in the steps taken to maintain Boston as a welcoming city.
