Latin Ice Cream Shop Closes Amid Immigration Concerns
The owner of a Latin-themed ice cream shop in Charlotte, Javier Morales, has expressed that the environment has become “too scary” for him and his staff. This fear stems from the potential presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents around the area.
Morales, who co-owns Legend Ice Cream & Snacks, noted that he’s not alone in facing this challenge; other businesses in North Carolina have also shut their doors due to similar threats related to ICE operations.
He shared, “We’re closed. We sell ice cream with Latin flavors, so 80% to 90% of our customers are Latinx. We also offer mangonadas and Mexican street corn. Right now, I just can’t risk having my employees profiled because many speak Spanish and match the description of what they might be looking for.”
This surge in ICE activity has been linked to the Trump administration’s Operation Charlotte Web, aimed at tackling illegal immigration. Comments from some observers indicate this situation underscores the magnitude of the ongoing immigration crisis.
Morales added, “We’re feeling uncertain. For an ice cream shop to have only one customer in two hours on a beautiful day—it’s just shocking.” He noted that the usual clientele came in visibly anxious, quickly making their purchases and leaving.
He voiced a strong concern about the profiling based on ethnicity, lamenting that it’s unfortunate for anyone to be judged on their appearance.
Additionally, a report highlighted an incident where an American citizen claimed he was stopped by ICE within a short timeframe, facing aggressive treatment.
Statistics from the ongoing operations reveal that one out of every six residents in Charlotte is foreign-born. A comment from DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the department is ensuring the safety of Americans while tackling what they see as public threats posed by illegal immigrants.
As for the ice cream shop, the closed sign humorously cited “icy conditions” as the reason for halting service—a light-hearted note amidst serious concerns.
