ICE detains migrant in Virginia after authorities dismiss child-abduction charges.

A man from Honduras, Hyrum Baquedano-Rodriguez, who was in the U.S. illegally, found himself under scrutiny last week when Virginia authorities unexpectedly dropped charges related to a child abduction case against him.

The 26-year-old was taken into federal custody on Friday after a Fairfax County judge turned down a plea agreement tied to accusations stemming from an incident involving a child in June 2023.

This reversal in the case forced prosecutors to dismiss the charges he was facing, which included serious allegations linked to his past criminal behavior.

“The court deemed it suitable to drop these recent charges, but Baquedano-Rodriguez has a long list of convictions in Virginia, which poses a significant risk to local residents,” a spokesperson noted.

Baquedano-Rodriguez has a troubling history, having allegedly attempted to abduct a four-year-old girl from her home during a violent invasion.

He faced multiple severe accusations—including intent to harm and robbery. Reportedly, he was caught trying to enter the girl’s home through a window, which led to even graver accusations.

However, the charges were dropped after the judge rejected the plea deal, which the Fairfax County Federal Lawyer’s Office seemed to view as a lost opportunity for accountability.

Baquedano-Rodriguez first came into contact with Border Patrol agents in August 2018 upon illegally crossing into the U.S. near Yuma, Arizona. He was released on immigration bonds in January 2019 by a federal judge.

His immigration status since then is somewhat unclear, but in 2021, he faced charges related to indecent exposure and the following year was convicted for attempting to cause property damage in Fairfax County, leading to an 18-month prison sentence.

More recently, in 2022, he was convicted for disorderly conduct and contributing to the delinquency of minors, each resulting in a 12-month sentence. In 2023, he again faced charges for similar property-related offenses.

“All of his actions pose a dire threat to our communities,” remarked a representative at the lawyer’s office.

After his recent arrests, a judge ordered him to return to Honduras, and he currently remains in ICE custody while waiting for his removal.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin emphasized the importance of protecting residents, stating that ensuring safety is a priority for all leaders across various levels of government.
