Exclusive: Arrest of Illegal Immigrant in Murder Case
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended an undocumented Ecuadorian immigrant in Minnesota facing charges related to a fatal vehicular incident on Friday.
This incident, which occurred in August, involved Adriano Langari Inga from Germany, who was reportedly driving with a blood alcohol content significantly above the legal limit. The collision tragically resulted in the death of her mother, Victoria Eileen Harwell, and injuries to her teenage daughter and sister, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security.
Despite a lack of cooperation from local authorities in Minnesota, ICE successfully arrested Langari Inga, highlighting that this illegal immigrant’s actions were obstructing the prosecution related to the vehicle murder that led to Harwell’s death.
The situation has drawn criticism from various quarters, especially regarding how local law enforcement handled it. Langari Inga had been arrested on May 10 by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office due to an “unpaid warrant” but was released three days later without notifying ICE. This lack of communication seems to conflict with the agency’s requests to detain him.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office stated that they could not hold someone solely based on a detainer issued by ICE without a judicial warrant. If such a warrant were presented, they would inform ICE, allowing them to take custody.
While there were claims of improper handling by local authorities, it appears that ICE took steps to ensure the individual was removed from the streets of Minnesota. This has sparked discussions about the responsibilities of local officials in these cases.
Earlier this month, the White House expressed discontent with Minnesota’s handling of this situation, reiterating that Langari Inga originally entered the U.S. in June 2016. He was detained then and issued a removal order, but over time, it seems, his status was not adequately addressed.
In summary, the case raises significant questions about coordination between immigration enforcement and local law enforcement, especially in light of the tragic outcomes of such incidents. It’s apparent that more stringent measures are needed to ensure accountability in these situations.
