Democrats Push for Closure of Newark Immigration Detention Center as ICE Makes Arrests
Amid calls from Democrats to shut down an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has apprehended undocumented individuals with serious criminal records across the state. These include convictions for manslaughter, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
Lauren Biss from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated, “While sanctuary politicians and left-wing activists continue to spread false claims about the Delaney Hall ICE facility, our dedicated members are committed to removing criminal illegal aliens from New Jersey.”
New Jersey has successfully removed dangerous undocumented individuals with histories of voluntary manslaughter, sexual assault, robbery, fraud, threatening behavior, and aggravated assault. It’s vital for these sanctuary advocates to stop spreading misinformation about ICE and start acknowledging the efforts of law enforcement to keep our streets safe. We won’t allow violent groups to hinder our mission to restore safety in America.
Among those arrested recently by ICE was Jose Manuel Rivera Mez from Guatemala, previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter. In addition to this, he faced charges for weapons possession.
ICE also detained Marcos Delacruz from El Salvador, with prior convictions for sexual assault and fraud, and Success Bounte of Ghana, who has a record involving burglary and identity theft.
Other arrests in New Jersey include:
Ismael Antonio Moreno-Javier, from the Dominican Republic, was apprehended on May 28, with charges including terroristic threats, assault, and child neglect.
Carlos Javier Llano-Batista, also from the Dominican Republic, was arrested the same day for fraud, theft, and burglary.
Pastor Esteban Montez Navarro from Mexico was detained on May 25 for simple assault and weapons possession.
Cesar Augusto Díaz Poveda, who hails from Ecuador, was arrested on May 27, facing charges for assault and obstructing police efforts.
Pavlin Patricia da Silva from Brazil was taken into custody on May 30, with a history of robbery, theft, and damaging property.
David Benitez, an undocumented person from Honduras, was arrested on May 26 with a record of simple assault and other offenses, including contempt of court.
Finally, Jacinta Contreras Reyes, also from Mexico, was arrested on May 29 for crimes related to domestic violence and weapons possession.
This week, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport initiated a lawsuit against GEO Group, the federal contractor that manages the Delaney Hall Detention Center. The lawsuit argues that conditions in the facility are inhumane.
Alongside this legal action, Democrats such as Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim, along with Governor Mikie Sherrill, are advocating for the closure of Delaney Hall. The facility is essential for ICE operations, particularly in apprehending some of the country’s most dangerous undocumented individuals in the tri-state region.
