ICE detains University of Alabama doctoral student from Iran

The University of Alabama doctoral student was detained early Wednesday by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

University of Alabama officials confirmed Wednesday to Fox News Digital that a doctoral student identified by the university's newspaper as Alireza Doroudi. He was taken into custody by federal immigration authorities at his off-campus home early Tuesday.

Doroudi, a mechanical engineering student, reportedly came to the US in January 2023 on an F-1 student visa “after clearing all immigration checks.” Crimson White reported.

According to the report, his visa was revoked six months later, urging him to reach out to the university's international students and the Academic Services (ISS).

“ISSS responded with confidence, saying that his case was uncommon or problematic and that as long as he maintains his student status, he could legally remain in the United States,” according to a text message obtained by Crimson White.

Ice's database lists Doroudi as an Iranian native and although no current detention facilities are listed, he confirms that he is under ICE custody.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told Crimson White that it “stopped important national security concerns.”

“Federal privacy laws limit what can be shared about individual students,” the university wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital. “International students studying at the university are important members of the campus community and international students and academic services are available to support international students with questions. UA will continue to work with federal authorities in accordance with all immigration laws.”

UniVisty officials did not respond to further enquiries from Fox News Digital as to whether the agency knew about the suspected expiration of a visa.

ICE confirmed Tufts University Rumeysa Ozturk's arrest at Fox News on Wednesday.

The ice was taken into custody earlier this week. Tufts University Students From Türkiye in Somerville, Massachusetts.

The president of Sunil Kumar University told Fox News Digital that the university learned that international medical graduate students were in custody by federal authorities in off-campus apartments in Somerville.

Unlike the University of Alabama, the school's president confirmed that the school “has no prior knowledge of the incident and did not share information with federal authorities prior to the event.”

Kumar is also said that Tufts reportedly has ended Ozturk's Visa, and that its leadership is validating.

A DHS spokesperson said in an investigation by Fox News agents and ICE that Ozturk is “engaged in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that enjoys killing Americans.”

Ozturk's lawyer told Fox News that she has Valid F-1 visa status Before her arrest, and there were no charges against her.

In January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw student visas for Hamas supporters.

According to the university's website, Tufts received $115.2 million in funding as of fiscal year 2025 from the National Institutes of Health.

The University of Alabama received $143 million federal grants, according to its 2023-24 annual financial report.

DHS and ICE did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comments on Doroudi's detention.
