ICE detention centers at capacity — as Border Patrol closes facilities amid drop in illegal crossings

While the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention Centers approach breakpoints, Border Patrol has closed temporary holdings due to a significant decline in illegal intersections under President Trump.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is closing the door to a softside detention center called “Firefly,” sources said.

The Biden administration has opened more than 150,000 square feet of facilities and found space in Eagle Pass, Texas, to handle thousands of illegal immigrants streaming across the border.

“They were always supposed to be temporary… That temporary solution has now become four years,” said one CBP source.

Due to the lack of illegally crossing immigrants, patrol facilities at the border are almost empty.

In April, they encountered around 8,000 illegal immigrants across the border, marking the lowest month in at least 25 years, according to leaked data originally obtained by the Post.

In response, Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks provided ICE with his temporary facility.

“We provide our space for the ice, because if you look at the numbers… they're arresting more people at the border than we've come in,” the chief recently told the Post.

“We are ensuring that the cups don't refill as ice makes those arrests internally and reduces the number of illegals in our country,” Banks continued.

“Our intention is to provide it to ice. If the ice needs it, they can take it and move it forward, or we'll get out of the temporary detention space business,” he added.

ICE currently has the funds to hold 41,500 illegal immigrants, which already “has been burning it well to hundreds of millions of dollars,” a source from the senior agency told the post earlier, revealing that it has opened four new federal prisons to address the issue.

If ICE refused the offer, the bank vowed to close the temporary processing centre, highlighting the enormous costs of operating the facility.

ICE may have been reduced as the facility fails to meet the agency's high requirements for detention facilities. Trump's Border Emperor Tom Homan They reportedly lower these standards to allow more local police officers to detain immigrant criminals for the ice.

The closure of the processing center comes when Vice President JD Vance visited the border of Eagle Pass on Wednesday to promote the Trump administration's successful crackdown.

“President Trump has strengthened and actually demanded that his entire government take his border control mission seriously,” he said.
