Controversy Surrounds ICE Operations
Acting ICE director Todd Lyons commented on recent remarks by lawmakers, particularly blaming Representative Pramila Jayapal for suggesting that ICE’s actions resemble those of terrorists. He noted that this isn’t the first time lawmakers have tried to shift attention away from real threats.
In a recent social media update, Jayapal asserted that “ICE is acting like a terrorist,” accusing them of targeting individuals with legal status, including US citizens, who are allegedly being abducted by masked agents.
She described the federal operations as “unsurveillance, no accountability,” deeming them “completely lawless.” In a conversation with Brianna Keilar on “CNN News Central,” Jayapal reaffirmed her position, expressing disbelief at the current state of affairs, remarking, “I never thought I’d see this in America.” She called for accountability from the administration regarding citizens turned into legal, permanent residents.
Protests Against ICE in Los Angeles
In California, anti-ICE protests have escalated, with officials claiming that over 40 protesters allegedly attacked police officers and endangered children during these demonstrations.
Responding to these claims, Lyons pointed out that actual anti-ICE protesters have previously resorted to violence, referencing a 2019 attempt to bomb the ICE Northwest Processing Center in Washington. He claimed that Jayapal’s labeling of ICE officers as “terrorists” contributes to a troubling rise in violent incidents against law enforcement, which has reportedly increased by almost 700% due to escalating rhetoric.
He emphasized the bizarre situation of a Congressional representative prioritizing support for violent criminals over officers protecting the community. According to Lyons, the only apologies needed are from lawmakers to their constituents.
The Department of Homeland Security has reported a dramatic rise in attacks on ICE officers and federal agents, which have surged 690% compared to last year. This increasing violence raises serious concerns about the safety of these agents and their families amidst the heated political climate.
One ICE agent expressed his frustrations, noting that the rhetoric from Democratic leaders is directly linked to this rising threat, adding a personal concern for his family’s safety.
