ICE director comments on violence at Portland facility amid limited local police support

Portland ICE Facility Under Constant Attack

Federal immigration officials report that their facility in Portland, Oregon, has been under nightly assaults, with little assistance from local law enforcement due to directives from city leaders.

In a recent conversation with Fox News’ Bill Melgin, Camila Wamsley, director of Portland’s ICE Office, shared that the violence has persisted for over 100 nights. She noted that the Portland Police have been largely absent under the current city leadership.

“I just can’t get my head around what the FDA is doing. It’s a bit confusing,” Wamsley stated. “It’s disheartening to witness attacks happening daily, and I realize that, unless specific federal laws are triggered, there’s not much authority to step in.”

Wamsley described how protests have escalated significantly, evolving from mere chants and signs to more aggressive actions, including bottle rockets aimed at ICE buildings, shattered windows, and lasers directed at officers.

She explained that protesters have even tracked staff members to their homes, doxxing at least six employees.

“Later into the evening, a lot of people dressed in black show up,” she said. “Their intention seems to be to cause chaos. They obstruct our vehicles, vandalize them, and even try to follow our staff home.”

Wamsley expressed concern that if the crowd size increases quickly, the violence could become even more concerning.

“We’ve witnessed crowd sizes expand from 50 to 1,000 in just half an hour,” she mentioned. “With only about 20 officers available, it’s impossible to secure the building effectively.”

She pointed out that the Portland Police have been slow to respond, sometimes failing to show up altogether, which leaves the facility vulnerable.

“The police might take a different stance just six blocks away, but this seems to be their approach here, guided by the mayor and the city council,” Wamsley remarked.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Mayor’s office and the police department for their perspective.

Despite these challenges, Wamsley affirmed that ICE personnel remain dedicated to their mission.

“The individuals working here are committed to serving the American public,” she said. “They’re enforcing immigration laws that have been in place since the 1950s. That hasn’t changed, and we’ll continue our work as usual.”

Todd Lignell, a special aide to Oregon’s Homeland Security Investigation, highlighted that federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are looking into groups allegedly inciting unrest.

“They’re not just dealing with HSI; they’re also up against the FBI, ATF, DEA, IRS—it’s a significant force,” he noted.

Portland continues to be a focal point of tension, especially concerning the ICE facility.

President Trump has announced plans to deploy 200 National Guard troops to Portland to assist immigration authorities, with these troops positioned near protest areas.

This warning follows an incident at the Dallas ICE facility on September 24, where two detainees were killed, and another was hospitalized after a gunman opened fire before taking his own life.

Authorities have recovered shell casings in that case.
