Changes in DHS Leadership Reflect Trump’s Deportation Strategy
A shift in leadership is happening within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as the Trump administration intensifies its focus on deporting individuals living in the country illegally.
According to four senior officials at DHS, these changes are set to impact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field offices in various cities. A report on Monday highlighted that several senior leaders would be replaced by personnel from the U.S. Border Patrol.
This announcement arrives as officials aim to boost the quantity of deportations significantly.
There seems to be a divide among leaders. On one side, you have Border Czar Tom Homan and ICE Director Todd Lyons, who emphasize targeting criminal aliens and those with final deportation orders. On the flip side, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Senior Advisor Corey Lewandowski, and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino advocate for a more extensive approach, aiming to target all individuals in the U.S. illegally to heighten deportation numbers.
In September, Homan noted that around 1.6 million individuals had voluntarily left the U.S., according to reports.
He remarked, “A lot of people aren’t coming. That helps keep the border secure. And that was part of the strategy from the beginning. We said, ‘If we show them the results, if we show them that we’re actually there and looking for them, a lot of people will leave.’”
On social media, FOX News’ Bill Melgin mentioned that, based on sources from DHS and the Trump administration, “Up to 12 ICE field office directors have been removed and reappointed to increase the number of deportations, and mass removals of ICE leaders nationwide are underway.”
He elaborated: “The move seems to be spearheaded by Corey Lewandowski, with some ICE directors expected to be swapped out for Border Patrol and CBP agents, hand-picked by the assertive Commander Greg Bovino. ICE field office directors in cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Philadelphia, among others, are reportedly part of this reshuffle.”
Additionally, Washington Examiner reporter Anna Giarritelli shared that ICE officials in major cities were removed from their roles quietly last week, following directives from the Trump administration and DHS leadership.
Giarritelli also reported: “The Trump administration aims to transform ICE with a more aggressive Border Patrol influence. Mayor Greg Bovino of El Centro, Calif., has recently received praise for his role in apprehending undocumented immigrants, which has garnered favorable attention from the Trump administration.”
However, integrating Border Patrol into ICE operations, especially in urban settings like San Diego and Philadelphia, is quite an unconventional move. While both agencies address immigration, their approaches differ significantly—Border Patrol operates at the border while ICE mainly focuses on interior enforcement.
Breitbart News noted on October 20 that DHS had arrested nearly 500,000 illegal aliens in the last nine months. ICE agents are reportedly continuing their efforts to apprehend violent offenders across the country.
