Congressman Critiques Government Shutdown’s Impact
During a recent appearance on CNN’s “The Lead,” Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) addressed the implications of the ongoing government shutdown and the Democratic Party’s role in it. He stated, “The current situation is not working for everyone. It’s completely unacceptable. For instance, in Illinois, we’re facing not just impending health care cost increases but also significant health issues within our communities.” He highlighted the concerns about ICE actions, noting that they’ve been increasingly aggressive in local areas, with the National Guard stationed nearby. “People are frustrated with how things are,” he added.
Host Jake Tapper showcased a clip of Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) stating, “Today is Groundhog Day.” He remarked that it’s not a light matter. “That’s a classic movie, sure, but the reality here is serious. The damage is real and affecting everyday Americans.”
Tapper inquired, “Is Fetterman onto something here? This situation is affecting regular citizens, and Democrats are contributing to the shutdown by not supporting a continuing resolution that would keep the government running for a bit longer.”
In response, Krishnamoorthi noted, “The issue is that the existing situation isn’t benefiting anyone. It’s unacceptable. In Illinois, there’s not only the looming rise in health care expenses, but ICE’s out-of-control operations are impacting our communities. The National Guard is literally just 30 minutes away from where I sit. People are voicing their discontent with the status quo.” He continued, emphasizing the importance of addressing Obamacare tax credits before they expire, as families are already burdened with rising food, energy, and housing costs in this current economy.
Previously, Krishnamoorthi mentioned, “Trump could resolve this shutdown in about half an hour by agreeing to extend the Obamacare tax credits.”
