ICE, Under Trump’s Guidance, Increases Illegal Immigrant Arrests in Pittsburgh

Increase in ICE Arrests in Pittsburgh

Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) has significantly increased its arrest rate for illegal immigrants in Pittsburgh since the Biden administration took charge. So far this year, around 580 individuals have been detained, compared to approximately 210 during the same period last year under Joe Biden.

Despite this uptick in arrests, the Pittsburgh police have not been able to lend their support to ICE’s immigration enforcement initiatives. This is somewhat surprising, especially for a city that has been under Democratic leadership since 1934.

The arrest figures were compiled by a non-governmental organization called an international data project, which aims to assist groups advocating for illegal immigrants.

In contrast to the Pittsburgh Police, eight other agencies across the region have entered into ICE’s 287(g) agreement, collaborating with the agency on immigration enforcement efforts.

According to estimates by organizations like Pew and the Migration Studies Center, Pennsylvania’s population of illegal immigrants is around 300,000.

The heightened presence of ICE has drawn criticism from activists, especially following an incident at a restaurant on August 7 that disrupted business operations. Activists accused ICE agents of causing a fire in the kitchen area while making arrests, although ICE claimed the fire was started by the individuals trying to evade law enforcement.

An ICE spokesperson stated that any damages, including minor fires, were the result of illegal aliens attempting to flee or hide from authorities.

Some businesses are feeling the strain of ICE’s increased activity, as it has become more challenging to find workers. This situation has led to some individuals leaving the city, while others are simply not showing up for work, leading to more arrests and deportation proceedings.

Business owners are expressing frustration over the tightening labor market, as they may now be forced to hire American workers at higher wages, which affects their profit margins.
