An Idaho bar has caused controversy after announcing it will be celebrating “Straight Awesomeness Month” instead of LGBTQ Pride Month.
The Old State Saloon, a bar in Eagle, Idaho, announced its celebrations on Facebook, inviting people to join in on a month of festivities and drink specials.
“Please join us in celebrating straight people this month. Without them, none of us would be here!” Barr wrote.
The bar announced that one Monday in June would be “Straight Male Monday,” offering a free draft beer to any “straight male dressed like a straight male.”
according to New York Post:
The bar announced it was looking for “professional” judges who would be qualified to “determine whether the men’s chosen attire is officially heterosexual” and would offer $15 an hour plus free beer as compensation to anyone who “believes the men’s chosen attire is officially heterosexual.”[s] You have the ability to discern the straight thread.”
Wednesdays are for couples, with each “heterosexual couple” receiving 15% off their bill.
Thursdays are ladies’ night (for straight women, to be exact), and “Her Hetero Happy Hour” promises all-day happy hour prices for straight ladies.
Comments on Facebook were mixed, with some welcoming the move and others condemning it as an unsettling act of bigotry.
“This is deeply disappointing. I can tolerate differing political views but I cannot tolerate bigotry and hatred towards marginalized communities,” one user wrote.
“Imagine that anxiety,” wrote another.
“I’m straight so I don’t need this. Maybe because I know I’m straight,” said another.
“Thank you for standing up for the rest of the community who were too scared to do the right thing,” one user wrote in support of the move.
“It’s great that you’re brave enough to host a straight men’s Monday party,” said another supporter.
The Old State Saloon addressed the criticism in a subsequent post.
“1) We love our LGBTQ+ customers! 2) We will not change our minds or give in to harsh reactions. 3) Everyone is welcome to join us in celebrating heterosexuality this June!” it reads.
“If you ‘love’ your LGBTQ+ patrons, prove it. Make a night for them,” one commenter fired back.
“We love our Black customers. We love our white customers. We love our customers who work for the USPS. But we don’t have a special night for them. We don’t have a special night for LGBTQ+ people,” Barr responded. “We choose to celebrate straight people, and we should be able to do that without so many people being mean to us, lying to us, canceling us, attacking our business, or trying to make us say who they are.”
She added, “If you want to change who we celebrate, get over it. It’s not going to happen. Long live heterosexuals!”
