Idaho police chief shares updates on the Bryan Kohberger case

Police Chief Reveals New Details About Idaho Quadruple Murder

The Idaho State Police Chief recently shared new insights into the case involving Brian Coberger, who has been accused of the brutal murder of four University of Idaho students. Moscow Police Chief Anthony Darlinger spoke with a news outlet about significant developments, including the timeline of traffic stops involving Coberger prior to the investigation honing in on him.

Darlinger explained that Coberger and his father made two stops in Indiana during a cross-country trip before authorities identified him. On November 13, 2022, Coberger allegedly left a Ka-Bar knife sheath at the crime scene, returning home with his father by December 19. Notably, he was studying at Washington State University, which is only about ten miles away from where the murders occurred.

Interestingly, Darlinger claims Coberger mentioned victim Kaylee Goncalves during the incident itself. “If we had known about him then, he wouldn’t have been able to leave that area,” Darlinger commented.

Coberger was residing in a student apartment in Pullman, Washington, while the victims lived just across the state line in off-campus housing near the university. His arrest happened on December 30 when police tracked him down at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.

“We had many various leads and we followed them all,” Darlinger noted, recalling the extensive interviews conducted. “It was quite taxing, and I can’t even remember how many we spoke to, but it was hundreds. The sheath left at the scene was a crucial piece of evidence.” Coberger’s background in criminology likely played a role in his careful approach, leaving no DNA trace on the victims.

Moreover, new documents reveal that the victims had expressed concerns about being stalked before the incident, shedding light on Coberger’s unsettling behavior while at school. Despite the evidence, the police are confident they have tracked down the suspect’s vehicle and believe he used only one knife during the attacks.

“We considered all angles, but given the rural nature of Northern Idaho, it’s tough to say where the weapon might be now,” Darlinger explained. The investigation faced challenges as they searched for the knife, and Coberger’s interactions with law enforcement at the time of his arrest were notable; he initially cooperated but requested an attorney when he found out detectives from Idaho were involved.

Darlinger added, “It was surprising when the defense reached out about a plea deal, but we recognized that’s part of the process.” However, the possibility of a death penalty was still on the table, although it would require unanimous approval from a jury.

In the end, Coberger’s plea deal was struck, leading to a sentence that will keep him incarcerated for the brutal murders and a robbery charge, ensuring he will spend significant time behind bars. It seems there are still many unanswered questions about the case, but this new information is shedding light on a highly complex situation.
