Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that if the Supreme Court does not act “very quickly” on the issue of presidential immunity, the court will push for a special counsel. “We are making a prudent decision,” he said. Post-election Jack Smith 2020 election interference trial.
“President Trump’s strategy to slow down these cases appears to be working,” anchor Dana Bash said. Do you think there’s a chance he won’t be tried in any of these cases before his election day?”
Schiff said he could “delay the trial and potentially avoid the trial. This is a proven tactic throughout Trump’s career, and it’s important that the courts understand what he’s doing and his motives for prolonging this.” I hope they follow that strategy in New York. I hope they follow that strategy in New York. We should look at the facts as to why the announcement was delayed, and the trial should not be postponed any further.”
He added: “But my biggest concern is about the incident on January 6th. This is the most serious of the series of allegations against the president. It was brought by the Justice Department. The Supreme Court. moved very quickly in ruling that Mr. Trump could be on the ballot. The question is, will it move with great speed in rejecting this false immunity claim? If that’s not the case, then you’re essentially making a deliberate decision to get the trial through the election, and I think that would be a terrible decision in the interests of justice as well. It would be a terrible decision to take away information that would be known to the public, but it would only further discredit this partisan and reactionary court.”
