If Trump Attempts to Jail ‘Political Enemies,’ That’s ‘Banana Republic Stuff’

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) said Thursday on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” that if President-elect Donald Trump lets the Justice Department go after his political opponents, it will be “like a banana republic.” He said it would happen.

Asked about possible charges against members of the Jan. 6 committee, Goldman said, “The whole purpose of Donald Trump being elected to the FBI was to do exactly that, to destroy his political opponents.'' It's about jail. It's about Banana Republic.” This is not only bad for political opponents and the political system, but it undermines the rule of law as a whole. This undermines the credibility of all prosecutions out there, as defendants across the country claim their prosecutions are political. He has already weakened the organization and will go even further if Kash Patel is confirmed. ”

Co-host Jonathan Lemire said: “So, Congressman, follow up right away. You’re talking about Donald Trump’s political opponents. You served as lead counsel in President Trump’s first impeachment trial when he was last in office. Are you considered a political opponent? Are you worried that you will be targeted or prosecuted?”

“I'm on the enemies' list, and I think that's a possibility. I welcome that possibility,” Goldman said. , I want the attention to be on me and not on the good people who are really subject to retaliation for just doing their jobs. I hope that I will be able to stand up for myself willingly and competently and have a megaphone here in Congress because I will be making a speech and arguing for a defense of the clause. If you're going to attack the enemy, do it, Donald Trump.”
