Speaking on CNN News Central on Friday, Biden campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu said former 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “would have to destroy democracy to become president of the United States.”
“Yesterday, a very sacred principle that is necessary to preserve our democracy was upheld, which is very simple in America: that everyone is subject to the rule of law, no one, no one, not even a person who has served as president of the United States. And yesterday was a very solemn, solemn day for our country. It’s no good for anybody to have a former president who has been convicted. But in order to preserve our democracy, it’s really important that we make sure that we are in fact the rule of law and not the opposite, which is mob rule,” Landrieu said. “It’s now a fact that Donald Trump is a convicted felon. It’s also a fact that he faces civil charges for defamation, sexual abuse and business fraud. It’s also a fact that in order for him to become president of the United States, he would have to destroy our democracy. And what happened yesterday doesn’t change the fact that only the American people can stop him from becoming president again on Election Day.”
