Ilhan Omar Faces Backlash Over Recent Comments
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is under fire from critics who accuse her of inciting violence after two shootings involving federal immigration agents took place in Portland and Minneapolis last week.
Critics highlight remarks Omar made during a cable interview where she labeled ICE as murderers, as well as statements she made during recent protests in Minneapolis. Alongside two other Congress members, she visited a detention center, attracting both supporters and hecklers from ICE.
In another incident, a video captured Omar on the back of a pickup truck, rallying protesters in Minneapolis, saying, “We’re going to make sure these people pay for what they did to us.”
Conservative commentators have pointed to these comments as evidence of Omar inciting violence. These accusations come amid growing concerns over political violence, particularly following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
House Republicans Seek Hearing Following Deadly ICE Shooting
Benny Johnson, a conservative activist, criticized Omar’s participation with protesters, claiming she was encouraging violence against ICE. “We’re going to show them all the way out, and we’re going to make sure they pay for what they’ve done to us!” she shouted, which sparked loud cheers from the crowd. “We will do our best in this resistance!”
Ryan Fournier, a founder of Students for Trump, alleged that Omar referred to federal employees as “terrorists” during a weekend demonstration.
Commentator Logan O’Handley demanded Omar’s expulsion from Congress, accusing her of lying on immigration documents and instigating violence against ICE.
Omar Accuses Federal Officials of Misconduct
During a recent visit to the ICE facility, Omar and her colleagues claimed that the Trump administration and ICE officials are “making people disappear” in darkness, which critics seized upon to bolster their accusations against her.
David Harris, another conservative figure, echoed the sentiment that Omar’s comments were incitements to violence, labeling them as lies.
In response to Omar’s comments about disappearances, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin dismissed her accusations as misinformation meant to vilify federal immigration officials.
Critics have also pointed to Omar’s remarks in a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, where she accused ICE agents of committing “murder.” “ICE is perpetrating state-sanctioned violence in our communities,” she claimed, referencing the impact of federal actions on local citizens.
Some conservative analysts, like political strategist Steve Guest, argued that Omar’s inflammatory remarks exacerbate tensions, specifically by accusing ICE of murder in the context of recent events.
James Gagliano, from the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund, criticized Omar for making unverified statements, suggesting that if she disagreed with the law, she should work to change it rather than making incendiary public claims.
Fox News Digital reached out to Omar for her perspective but did not receive a response.
