Ilhan Omar Highlights the Danger of Armed Outsiders Coming to Minnesota After School Shooting

Ilhan Omar Calls for Federal Gun Control After Recent School Shootings

Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota pointed to recent school shootings, committed by local residents, to advocate for federal gun control measures.

Reports indicate that a shooter opened fire during a morning mass at Minneapolis Announcement Catholic School on Wednesday, with kindergarten and eighth-grade students present. Appearing on a weekday segment, Omar stressed that although Minnesota has strict gun laws, these measures are ineffective without federal action.

“There are strong gun laws in Minnesota, but we’re not an island. Not too far away is Indiana, and while we might make strides within our borders, that doesn’t stop individuals from neighboring states from impacting our community,” she remarked.

She argued that without comprehensive federal laws, piecemeal regulations at the state level can’t adequately address cross-border gun violence.

“We need to recognize ourselves as a collective community, affected by decisions made—or not made—in various states. Our lives require federal protections,” Omar emphasized.

Omar felt isolated in her insistence on action against gun violence, recalling how Americans swiftly imposed restrictions following previous school shootings. “It’s a national issue. The loss of our children shouldn’t be normalized, especially when other nations have responded decisively after such tragedies,” she said.

According to Omar, other countries implemented changes quickly after their first school shootings. Yet, data suggests that fatal school violence is also spreading in Europe, indicating that this isn’t solely an American dilemma. For context, a report from the University of Washington in 2023 highlighted that the gun homicide rate in the U.S. is significantly higher than in countries like Australia and Germany, challenging her assertion that other countries simply said “no more” to gun violence.

Additionally, sources have explained how semi-automatic firearms operate, and the National Rifle Association has noted that owning fully automatic firearms without proper registration is illegal under federal law.
