Illinois Governor Signs Immigration Protection Law
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker recently enacted a law aimed at countering what he describes as the “corruption” of the Trump administration. He argues this federal policy is unconstitutional.
The new legislation restricts federal immigration enforcement beyond state courthouses and permits residents who feel their civil rights have been compromised to take legal action against federal immigration officials. Moreover, it will limit immigration operations near places like hospitals, universities, and daycare centers.
Pritzker expressed his thoughts, stating, “Dropping your child off to daycare, going to the doctor, or attending class shouldn’t be a life-altering task.” He also remarked on the mind-boggling nature of the Trump administration’s attempts to inhibit people from accessing the courts and fulfilling their civic responsibilities.
The law also prevents school officials from disclosing the immigration status of students or staff members.
In a social media post, Pritzker reaffirmed the law’s intent, saying, “Sending your child to daycare, going to the doctor, or attending class should not be a life-altering task. We will stand up against the corruption of the Trump administration.”
In response, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) criticized Pritzker, claiming he was acting against the Constitution and federal authority. They pointed out that the U.S. Constitution explicitly states that it and federal laws take precedence over state laws.
DHS stated, “By signing this legislation, @GovPritzker violated the Supremacy Clause… I hope the headlines and likes on social media are worth it.”
Additionally, a recent DHS report indicated that 1,768 criminals, including undocumented immigrants, were released from detention in Illinois. Notably, some had serious convictions, such as murder and assault.
Some believe Pritzker might aim for a presidential nomination in 2028.
