Illinois Governor Criticizes Federal Immigration Actions
On Monday, Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois accused U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents of unfairly targeting individuals based on their race, particularly stating that they are often not white.
During a press conference with Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, Pritzker condemned the actions of the Trump administration for deploying federal agents to Chicago over the recent weekend.
Pritzker pointedly remarked that the federal government continues to perpetuate falsehoods, claiming to focus on serious criminal offenders while, in reality, around 60% of those targeted by ICE in Illinois this year had no criminal history whatsoever.
He expressed frustration, saying, “It’s bewildering to see people harassed simply because they don’t fit a certain demographic. Just a year ago, such practices felt unthinkable in America. Yet here we are.”
The governor’s remarks came after reports of federal agents covertly operating in downtown Chicago, leading to the detention of numerous migrants. This has stoked tensions, especially in light of the mayor’s recent executive orders intended to restrict law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration initiatives.
Critics from the Trump era quickly responded, claiming that Pritzker was aligning himself with those who are illegally present in the country. Furthermore, the Trump administration has criticized Chicago for its local policies that prevent city personnel from assisting in federal immigration enforcement.
Former President Trump, for his part, has suggested that rampant illegal border crossings need to be addressed and has pledged to increase the deportation of immigrants on his watch, framing it as a necessary step to restore order.
