‘I’m Just Blown Away by the Sacrifice and Patriotism This Moment Embodies’: Maddow Applauds Biden Withdrawal

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said she was “struck” by President Joe Biden’s patriotism during the network’s breaking news that he had dropped out of the presidential race.

“This is history,” Maddow said. “We’re all going to remember where we were and what we were doing at this moment. What a man, what a patriot. Uh, what selfless dedication to country. He’s been a phenomenal president. He got us out of COVID, he got us out of COVID faster than any major country on Earth, at a time when the world was suffering economically from COVID. The Biden economy is literally the envy of the world. He ended Donald Trump’s presidency after one term. And he was polite, respectable, honorable, normal and sometimes boring, at a time when we desperately needed boredom.”

She continued, “Nothing he has done in his career has been a greater or more significant service and sacrifice for this country than what he has done today. I know him a little, I know his character, I have spoken with him many times, both formally and informally, and I see nowhere in his character that he would be able to make the decision he made today. It is the opposite of what is natural or easy for him. He is not wired to do things like this. His superpower is underestimated, and that is why he has staunchly resisted calls to step down.”

Maddow added, “He made this decision today to give this country a chance, a reasonable chance, to not return Donald Trump to the White House, to not return a president to the White House who refused to resign the last time and who convened an angry mob to overthrow the government. Joe Biden is saying he’s stepping down because apparently the person who gives him the best chance to do that is not me, it has to be someone else. I’m just overwhelmed by the sacrifice and the patriotism embodied in this moment.”
