Rockets Face Dramatic Loss Against Lakers
The Houston Rockets, just 25 seconds away from securing their first playoff victory in the NBA, found themselves in an unexpected situation last night. Instead of celebrating, they had to mount a remarkable comeback.
After leading by six points late in the game against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Rockets faltered due to critical turnovers and missed opportunities. As it stands, they remain undefeated in three games this series—a record that no NBA team has previously achieved under similar circumstances. Following the game, Houston’s head coach, Ime Udoka, delivered a clear, albeit tough, message to his players.
“Grow up,” he stated, addressing the team’s performance. “You’re not that young anymore. You’ve been to the playoffs once, and we need to analyze every situation we’re in.”
Despite Kevin Durant being sidelined again due to knee issues—a concern that had already cost him Game 1—the Rockets were positioned to close out the game. LeBron James made critical mistakes, resulting in Houston taking a 101-95 lead. However, from that point on, everything unraveled. A foul against Marcus Smart while attempting a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining allowed him to reduce the deficit, making all three free throws and closing in on the Rockets.
Things got even messier when James intercepted the ball from Reed Shepard and sank a three-pointer, tying the game at 101 with only 13 seconds left. In overtime, the Lakers outscored the Rockets 11-7, ending the game at 112-108.
LeBron James put in a stellar performance, scoring 29 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and dishing out six assists while playing over 45 minutes. With other key players, like Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves, out with injuries, he expressed a sense of obligation to step up for the team.
It’s clear that if the Rockets have any intention of making history, they’ll need to harness that urgency and emotion within their locker room.
