Superintendent Arrested Amid Major Immigration Investigation
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reportedly made an illegal arrest involving a prominent public school superintendent. The individual in question was found with weapons and a significant sum of money.
On Friday, ICE agents detained Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyanese national working as the superintendent for Des Moines Public Schools. Federal agents revealed that, at the time of his arrest, Roberts had a loaded handgun, a hunting knife, and about $3,000 in cash. This information was confirmed in a statement to the Daily Call News Foundation.
Sam Olson, director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in St. Paul, stated, “The suspect was apprehended while he fled federal law enforcement in a vehicle issued by Des Moines Public Schools. This incident should raise awareness about the essential work our executives undertake daily to enhance public safety.” He also expressed confusion over how someone without a valid job permit and with a previous weapons charge managed to be employed within the school system.
According to ICE, Roberts had arrived in the U.S. in 1999 under a student visa but later received a final removal order from an immigration judge. Reports indicate he has also faced prior claims regarding weapon violations.
The circumstances surrounding Roberts’s ability to secure employment in the school district remain unclear. ICE emphasized that it is illegal for undocumented immigrants to possess firearms, and an investigation is ongoing regarding the transfer of firearms to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
In response to Roberts’s arrest, Des Moines Public Schools released a statement indicating that interim leadership would replace him temporarily. They affirmed their commitment to providing a secure and exceptional educational environment for all students.
The incident follows intensified immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, which has heralded a significant crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Just recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced that over two million undocumented individuals have been removed since the start of Trump’s presidency.
