Massive Virgin Mary Statue Unveiled in Polish Village
KONOTOPIE, Poland – A new statue of the Virgin Mary, thought to be the tallest in Europe, was revealed in a small village in Poland on Saturday, thanks to the support of one of the country’s wealthiest individuals.
The monument, which is 55.6 meters (182 feet) tall, is located in Konotopie, a community of fewer than 150 residents in central Poland. That height includes a 15-meter (49-foot) crown-shaped pedestal.
To put it into perspective, this statue is taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which stands approximately 38 meters (125 feet) when you factor in its pedestal.
It also surpasses Poland’s other significant religious statue, the Christ the King statue in Swiebodzin, which was unveiled in 2010 and reaches about 52 meters (170 feet) including its base.
While the Philippines boasts a larger Virgin Mary statue at about 98 meters (322 feet), the new structure in Poland is considered the largest of its kind within Europe.
In Poland, the majority of the population identifies as Catholic, and the Church has maintained a strong influence in societal matters since the fall of communism in 1989. This influence grew due to its role in supporting the anti-communist movement. Poland is also the birthplace of St. John Paul II, who led as Pope from 1978 until his passing in 2005. A statue of him, albeit smaller than the Virgin Mary statue, was unveiled in Częstochowa over a decade ago.
Although the role of religion in public life has gradually diminished, particularly among youth and in urban settings, the Catholic Church still holds sway in rural communities and among the older population.
The statue was commissioned by local billionaires Roman and Grazina Karkosik, who reside in a small palace not too far from Konotopie. Roman Karkosik made his fortune in the 1990s through various businesses, including manufacturing plastic bottles, and investments on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
The couple described the statue as a gesture of thanks to God, particularly in light of Roman’s recent health struggles.
Local officials aspire for the statue to become a popular pilgrimage site and tourist attraction. Notably, it features an observation deck integrated into its pedestal.
