Tragic Loss Amidst Conflict

My cousin, Sammy Mohammad Hirmi Almadoon, was only 18 when Israeli soldiers reported they had killed him at a food aid site in Khan Yunis, located in southern Gaza. He was simply a young man searching for food—a mundane act that ultimately led to his tragic end.

The reality is far more harrowing than any headline can capture. In fact, Israel has turned the provision of aid in Gaza into a perilous quest.

Sammy had already suffered greatly. The relentless Israeli assaults in northern Gaza had taken his parents and three brothers, including some with special needs. Compelled by hunger, he journeyed south in search of nourishment.

He trekked over six miles, arriving at one of four aid distribution centers operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. There, he decided to wait overnight so he could be among the first in line come morning.

Regrettably, that choice was fatal. Sammy was among over 1,400 Palestinians who lost their lives at such aid sites.

His death resonated deeply within our family. My sister, Chef Sama, runs a soup kitchen, and the news hit hard.

The weight of this tragedy is unbearable. Sammy’s grandmother, who battles chronic chest pain, had already buried ten children and grandchildren, only to lose another in this ongoing nightmare. Sammy became the latest in this sequence of loss.

Witnesses say that soldiers, alongside Sammy, shot and killed another 15 Palestinians, all in search of aid. Our understanding—however limited—was that the presence of an Israeli jeep heralded violence against those seeking help.

A compassionate neighbor, moved by the grandmother’s predicament, retrieved Sammy’s body from Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, risking his own safety to bring it back to a makeshift camp. The return of his body, undressed and disrespected, was a shocking indignity for a boy who had suffered so much. A single bullet had claimed his life.

This is what my people face: a desperate trap. Essentials like flour, cooking oils, and sugar, intended to sustain life, have been weaponized.

The world may be facilitating aid deliveries, albeit through inefficient and perilous airdrops, but it is Israel that decides who will live and who will die. Meanwhile, many international actors, including the U.S., appear to assist while actively arming Israel, complicating issues further.

I’m currently raising funds through UNRWA, the largest humanitarian organization in Gaza, but it often feels futile—aid is frequently blocked. Israel’s tactics render the foreign government-sponsored airdrops ineffective, delivering headlines but not relief to starving families.

The real crisis, I believe, doesn’t lie with humanitarian organizations—over 400 aid workers have lost their lives since October 2023. Instead, it is those who choose to remain silent, enabling the Israeli government to intentionally starve children and turn life-saving aid into a lethal trap.

That’s why my family and I operate a soup kitchen in northern Gaza. We prepare hot meals not only to nourish our neighbors but also to diminish the desperate need that drives people to these dangerous aid sites. In a sense, we feel powerless; we neither saved Sammy nor caused any more loss in the struggle for survival.

Israel has recently approved plans to fully occupy Gaza City, forcing residents to evacuate south, where nearly one million Palestinians now find themselves trapped. The atmosphere is suffocating, filled with fear of impending violence.

After 22 months of relentless bombing, destruction, and forced dislocation, yet another impending displacement looms large. My family feels uncertain about where to flee, whether safety exists, or if we can endure more violence.

The U.S. government continues to provide support for the Israeli campaign in Gaza. It’s maddening—there’s a deafening moral outrage, yet the Trump administration remains silent, using its position on the UN Security Council to block resolutions for a ceasefire and shield Israel from international scrutiny.

This failure is not merely inaction; it actively complements the aggression. Each veto and shipment of arms sends a clear message that Palestinian lives are expendable, and the pursuit of food is treated as a dangerous endeavor. This contradicts the values America claims to uphold and represents a profound betrayal of humanity.

Sammy’s death transcends personal grief. It serves as evidence of the system imposed upon Palestinians by Israel—one that strips away dignity and basic needs, deciding who lives and who dies. This situation poses a moral dilemma for supporters of Israel in the West.

Is the promise of food a pretext for murder? Is life’s dignity up for negotiation? We must hold accountable those who allow this to persist—governments, organizations, and enablers alike.

Rest in peace, Sammy. May your memory inspire justice for your family and all who deserve it.
