In new TV ad, Maryland’s Larry Hogan charts potential Senate path forward as centrist

Republican Senate candidate Larry Hogan is warning Republicans in Washington, D.C., that he won’t be a reliable vote if Maryland chooses to send him to Congress.

In a new TV ad that aired Tuesday, the former Maryland governor touted his bipartisan bona fides. “In the Senate, Republicans can’t count on my vote, but they can’t count on Democrats either,” he said.

“If they want my vote, they have to do what’s right for Maryland, not for one political party,” Hogan continued in the video, which was first reported. Punchbowl News“That’s exactly what I did as governor and that’s exactly the type of senator I want to be.”

The latest ads come as Democrats, struggling to retain their Senate majority despite unfavorable electoral maps, take aim at Trump, a Maryland Republican, portraying him as a stooge of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and a reliable source of Republican votes.

Democrats have used the abortion issue as a hot topic in the election to claim Hogan would help Republican senators pass anti-abortion legislation, but the former Republican governor has said he is “pro-abortion” and would support enacting Roe v. Regardless of party affiliation, Hogan has shown promise in Democratic states, particularly given his reputation as an anti-Trump moderate.

A March Washington Post/University of Maryland poll showed Hogan beating then-Democratic primary candidate Angela Alsobrooks, 50% to 36%. Notably, the poll was conducted during the heated Democratic primary campaign, before the Prince George’s County mayor’s victory.
