Increased security for Fourth of July celebrations due to concerns over Iran, expert advises

A former US Secret Service agent has indicated that both local and federal authorities are on heightened alert for potential threats during the upcoming July 4th celebrations, particularly due to rising tensions between the US and the Middle East. The anxiety escalated following reports that US forces had targeted three major Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22, as stated by officials from the Trump administration.

Michael Verden, CEO of the Lake Forest Group security firm and a once-active USSS agent, emphasized that the Department of Homeland Security has elevated its national threat advisory level, effective from June 22 and lasting until at least September 22. He noted, “This could be adjusted further depending on how the situation with Iran develops.” Verden mentioned that due to this heightened threat environment, security measures and precautions will be intensified during July 4th festivities.

Experts have warned that Iran may seek to retaliate to “save face” following these military strikes. In a bulletin dated June 22, the DHS highlighted Iran’s long-standing intention to target US officials deemed responsible for the 2020 killing of an Iranian military commander. They suggested that should Iranian leaders call for retaliatory actions through religious edicts, there could be a surge in violence from extremists within Iran, especially given previous attacks motivated by anti-Semitic feelings or opposition to Israel.

Verden reflected on the tragic Highland Park shooting on July 4, 2022, which claimed the lives of seven, including an eight-year-old. While the attack wasn’t characterized as terrorism, it raised concerns about the potential targeting of public outdoor events. He pointed out that cities could face threats in locations like subways or even from waterfronts.

According to Verden, both public and private event organizers should closely collaborate with local law enforcement in anticipation of the holiday. Federal intelligence officials are actively identifying and addressing emerging threats in anticipation of the event, linking this vigilance closely to the July 4th celebrations.

“Federal agencies are likely going to concentrate on pinpointing possible threats,” Burden said.

Verden mentioned that security measures will focus heavily on “access control,” which involves screening individuals entering venues, checking bags, and monitoring for suspicious activity or vehicles that could pose a threat.

He advised individuals attending July events to familiarize themselves with the layout and emergency protocols, especially since cell service might be disrupted during crises. He stressed that planning escape routes is essential.

Verden also proposed a three-stage approach for law enforcement in emergencies. This includes evaluating event spaces for potential vulnerabilities, establishing an effective security plan, and ensuring that first responders and other personnel are adequately trained prior to events.

He cautioned that patriotic events traditionally pose a higher risk, particularly since they commemorate significant historical events like the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, which enemies may exploit for potential attacks.

Lastly, reports from the Institute for International Security of Science indicated that recent Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities significantly impacted its capabilities. While damage was extensive, concerns remain about remaining materials and potential future threats.
