According to Pakistani military officials, India targeted three air force bases in Pakistan with missiles, most of which were intercepted on Saturday. This incident signifies another escalation between the two nuclear-armed nations. The underlying tension seems to stem from India’s condemnation of mass shootings it attributes to Pakistan.
In light of the rising conflict, Trump has expressed a desire to support both India and Pakistan, hoping for a resolution. “I want to see them stop,” he stated.
During a televised briefing, Pakistan Army spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif assured that the country’s air force assets remained secure. He noted that some of the missiles also impacted areas within India’s East Punjab, though no comments were immediately available from Indian officials. “This is a provocation of the highest order,” Sharif remarked.
The strikes specifically targeted the Nur Khan Air Force Base in Rawalpindi, the Marid Air Force Base in Chakwar city, and the Rafiki Air Force Base in Eastern Punjab. Some missiles reportedly landed in Afghanistan as well. Sharif revealed, “I want to give you the shocking news that India has fired six ballistic missiles from Adhampur city,” adding that one missile struck Adampur and the others hit Amritsar in Punjab.
Earlier this week, Pakistani forces claimed they had shot down over 20 drones.
Relations between the neighboring countries have soured since attacks on popular tourist spots in India-controlled Kashmir resulted in the deaths of 26 people, primarily Hindu tourists. India holds Pakistan responsible, while Pakistan denies any involvement.
