A 51-year-old Indian-American doctor from the Chicago area has pleaded guilty to federal health care fraud for billing Medicaid and private insurers for services that did not exist.
Mona Ghosh, who owns and operates Progressive Women’s Healthcare, which specializes in obstetrics and gynecology services, pleaded guilty to two counts of health care fraud.
Each charge carries a possible sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Franklin U. Valderrama set the sentence for October 22.
Federal prosecutors allege that Ghosh is responsible for at least $2.4 million in fraudulently obtained refunds.
As part of her plea agreement, she admitted to being responsible for more than $1.5 million in fraudulently obtained refunds.
The final amount will be decided by the court at the time of sentencing, media reported.
According to court documents, between 2018 and 2022, Ghosh submitted, or had his employees submit, false claims to Medicaid, TRICARE and numerous other insurers for procedures and services that were not provided or were not medically necessary, some of which were performed without patients’ consent.
Gosch also fraudulently inflated the length of his consultations and the complexity of his telehealth visits, and submitted claims using billing codes that did not cover his services in order to seek higher reimbursement rates, the plea agreement states.
She admitted to creating false patient medical records to support fraudulent reimbursement claims.
