Indian Student Kishan Kumar Singh in the US Pretends to be an Official to Scam 78-Year-Old Woman, Taken into Custody

An Indian student was arrested in North Carolina for allegedly attempting to defraud a 78-year-old woman by impersonating law enforcement. The student, 21-year-old Kishan Kumar Singh, was taken into custody in Guilford County last Saturday.

The authorities reported that the victim was informed her bank account had been compromised and was coerced into withdrawing substantial amounts of money for “safekeeping.” Singh was apprehended while trying to collect the package, claiming to be a “federal agent.”

He is now facing felony charges and is being held on a bond of $1 million at the Guilford County Detention Center.

According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Singh had been living near Cincinnati, Ohio, on a student visa since 2024. They noted concerns about scammers targeting elderly individuals in nursing homes, posing as law enforcement and soliciting money.

“We will never call you and ask for money. We will educate you and your loved ones,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Last month, two other Indian citizens on student visas were also arrested for theft related to fraudulent activities aimed at elderly victims. In a separate case, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office reported that 24-year-old Mahamadirhamvahora and Haji Arivahora posed as government agents and threatened victims, which is part of ongoing investigations affecting individuals across the United States.
