A time capsule from 1941 was discovered by a contractor at Indiana Dunes National Park in the town of Porter, authorities announced last week.
“On the afternoon of September 23, 2024, while restoration work funded through the Great American Outdoors Act was underway, a heavily oxidized and sealed copper box was discovered in the foundation of the lodge,” park rangers said in a recent statement. he wrote in a Facebook post.
The post included a photo showing the contents of the box, along with the history of the park area where the time capsule was found.

According to the NPS website, the camp was used as a summer camp for the children of U.S. Steel Company employees from 1941 to 1976, and was purchased by the National Park Service (NPS) in 1976. It was recovered from the Faroese Youth Camp.

After carefully unwrapping the folded tar-soaked paper, the park ranger discovered a small silk American flag with 48 eight stars on it.
Wrapped around the flag were several paper documents, including memoranda, speeches, certificates, and newspaper articles.

All items were placed behind the last stone placed at the foundation of the lodge.
Inside the box was a note informing them that the construction of the camp was complete.
