An Indiana mother tragically lost her life after intervening during a robbery attempt involving her son and an 18-year-old suspect during a Facebook Marketplace transaction.
On June 10, Jean Gragg, 40, and her son were attempting to sell a watch to a buyer, John Ford, outside their home in Edison Park, Indiana, which is close to the University of Notre Dame. The South Bend Police confirmed the details.
Gragg’s son planned to finalize the sale just before 10 p.m.
This wasn’t the first time the pair had used Facebook Marketplace; friends mentioned that it was a routine experience for Gragg’s son.
Things escalated when Ford reportedly brandished a handgun while inspecting the watch.
Family friend Debra McKinley shared that Gragg’s instinct to protect her son led her to step in. “When Jean stepped in to support her son, the man went over the edge,” she noted on GoFundMe.
Gragg, who worked as an office manager at H&R Block, intervened and attempted to push Ford away from her son, trying to clear the porch of the threat.
As Ford retreated down the driveway, he allegedly fired multiple shots at Gragg, with her family witnessing the horrifying scene.
She sustained a gunshot wound to the head from a single bullet.
Security footage captured the moment Gragg fell as Ford fled the scene. Gragg was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but was later declared brain dead. She was taken off life support on June 13, as reported by McKinley.
Her son expressed his deep admiration for her, referring to her as “My Superhero.”
Gragg was remembered fondly by her family, who noted her nurturing nature and how she always prioritized her son. Her obituary described her as a devoted mother who cared deeply for those around her.
Investigators located Ford at an apartment complex roughly three miles from where the incident occurred. A gun believed to be used in the shooting was found nearby, presumably discarded.
During police questioning, Ford allegedly confessed to firing the weapon at Gragg. He now faces charges including murder, attempted murder, and robbery, and is being held without bail at the St. Joseph County Jail.
