Indianapolis Motor Speedway Remembers NASCAR’s Kyle Busch
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is paying tribute to the late NASCAR driver Kyle Busch.
A memorial in his honor will be showcased on the venue’s iconic scoring pylon this Friday, following his passing on Thursday at just 41 years old.
“We are heartbroken by Kyle Busch’s passing. He was truly one of the most gifted racers in the history of IMS,” expressed racetrack president J. Douglas Boles. “Kyle was beloved by fans for his fierce competition and passion for the sport. He knew what it meant to race—and win—at Indianapolis.”
Boles extended his condolences to Busch’s wife, Samantha, their children Brexton and Lennix, the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and the entire NASCAR family.
This gesture allows fans, gathered for the annual Carb Day festivities before the Indianapolis 500, to honor the celebrated driver following his unexpected death.
According to his family, Busch was hospitalized due to a “serious illness” and had already withdrawn from participating in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway scheduled for Saturday.
The specific cause of death remains unclear, though it was noted that he had been dealing with a sinus cold that had worsened after encountering altitude changes at Watkins Glen two weeks prior.
Busch had a notable history with the Indianapolis track, having won six events on the storied 2.5-mile course, including consecutive Brickyard 400 victories in 2015 and 2016. In that same year, he also dominated the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series.
He is set to achieve his 700th career start in the Cup Series during the 2024 Brickyard 400.
As the Indianapolis 500 approaches this Sunday, race fans from across the country are expected to flock to the event, many reminiscing about Busch’s formidable presence on the racetrack throughout his 21-year career.
Busch notched a remarkable 234 victories across all three NASCAR touring series, surpassing all others except for the legendary Richard Petty, who has over 200 wins.
He clinched the NASCAR Championship twice, in 2015 and 2019.
A unique aspect of Busch’s career is that he is the only driver to secure at least one Cup Series victory in 19 consecutive years, spanning from 2005 to 2023.
