Assistant costume designer on Martin Scorsese’s films Killer of the Flower Moon She is suing Apple Studios for racism, claiming that her work as a Native American was suppressed during awards season.
In the lawsuit, Native American costume designer Christy Marie Hoffman claims that her work researching and designing costumes for the period drama was intentionally ignored and systematically excluded from Academy Award and Costume Designers Guild Award credits. summary.
Hoffman alleges in her complaint that she was originally listed as first assistant costume designer on the Costume Designers Guild Awards nomination list, but her name was removed at the request of lead designer Jacqueline West, who decided that all assistant designers should be credited equally and as a group, regardless of their role in the film.
After filing a complaint, the Costume Designers Guild agreed with Hoffman that Scorsese’s removal of his credits from the film was “inappropriate.”
The designer also claimed that being removed from the credits was retaliation after she filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about racial discrimination on the film’s set. The suit was settled in 2022.
Hoffman also accused clothing consultant Julie O’Keefe of failing to mention her by name during an interview after West was nominated for an Oscar. His lawsuit alleges breach of contract, retaliation and infliction of emotional distress.
According to her lawsuit, she “endured discriminatory behavior on the set” because she “poured her heart into” portraying Osage clothing for the film.
“She was subsequently targeted with advertisements that discredited her work during the film’s promotion and release and praised West and O’Keefe for the fruits of her hard work,” the lawsuit also states.
