Heckler Charged After Intrusion on NBC’s “Today” Show
A man who allegedly got past security at NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday has been charged with a hate crime. Law enforcement reports indicate that Andrew Truelove, 41, has a lengthy history of arrests in New York City, with multiple incidents occurring in the past year.
The encounter reportedly took place around 9 a.m. near Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center. Truelove shouted his desire to meet Al Roker but instead confronted host Craig Melvin, hurling a racial slur at him, according to sources.
Following the incident, Melvin signaled for security, which led to Truelove’s detainment by NYPD officers stationed at the building.
Afterwards, Truelove was taken to the Midtown North Precinct, facing charges that included robbery, harassment, and hate crime threats.
Sources revealed that he has been arrested eight times previously, mainly for criminal behavior. Officials noted he had been on probation for a similar offense since June 18.
In a prior incident, Truelove allegedly assaulted someone at his residence in January, reportedly grabbing her arm and forcefully closing a door on her. This led to charges of second-degree assault.
Although the interruption during the “Today” show was not broadcast, a studio photo later surfaced showing Melvin surrounded by several people involved in the situation.
NBC issued a statement affirming their commitment to safety: “Today is fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff, and guests very seriously. We are reviewing this incident and our security protocols to ensure a secure environment for everyone who works at or visits our studios.”
This situation is still developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
