Suspect in Houston’s Lovers Lane Murders Dies in Custody

The man implicated in the tragic Lovers Lane murders in Houston has passed away in custody, just weeks after his arrest for a double homicide that took place 36 years ago.

Floyd William Parrott, aged 64, was discovered unresponsive in a Nebraska prison cell on Tuesday. He was awaiting extradition to Texas, facing accusations of having slashed the throats of his girlfriends, Cheryl Henry, 22, and Andy Atkinson, 21, back in 1990.

The specific cause of Parrott’s death is currently under investigation. However, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare indicated that it appears he may have taken his own life.

Parrott was apprehended on March 25 in Lincoln, Nebraska, charged with murder, and thus solving a chilling cold case that has haunted the Houston area for decades.

Texas prosecutors expressed disappointment at not being able to present their findings in court, while also looking into another cold case connected to Parrott.

“We feel tremendous sadness for the families of Andy and Cheryl, who have been denied their day in court. Our frustration over what Parrott has taken from them is only rivaled by our commitment to continue our work,” said Samantha Knecht, the chief prosecutor of the Cold Case Division in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

She continued, “Yes, we are still actively investigating. Parrott’s death doesn’t erase his actions or deter our desire for justice. It doesn’t offer any solace to those he affected. That is why we are focusing on cold cases linked to Parrott in Louisiana. We owe it to the victims.”

The tragic events unfolded on August 22, 1990, when Henry and Atkinson decided to drive to a secluded area in west Houston, often referred to as “Lovers Lane,” after an evening at a club. Their bodies were discovered near their vehicle the following day by a security guard.

Reports indicate that Henry had been sexually assaulted and her throat had been cut. Atkinson was found tied to a tree nearby, with a deep gash nearly severing his neck.

Following Parrott’s arrest last month, District Attorney Sean Teare remarked that the case had become “one of Houston’s most haunting and infamous cold cases.”

Detectives apprehended Parrott after finding DNA from the murder scene that matched a sample he had submitted during a previous sexual assault allegation, which he claimed was consensual, as noted in court records.
