Mass Shooting at Brown University Leaves Two Dead
A tragic shooting at Brown University has resulted in the deaths of two students, while nine others sustained injuries. Authorities in Providence are still searching for the shooter, as a person of interest who was initially detained has since been released.
On Sunday, law enforcement apprehended a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin but later found no evidence linking him to the crime. After some hours, he was released, with officials confirming that the search for the actual shooter is ongoing, now entering its third day.
“There was some evidence that justified the detention of this individual,” state Attorney General Peter Neronha explained in a press conference. He noted that this man, who had been an infantry soldier in the U.S. Army, was arrested based on initial findings. However, he added, “That evidence now points in a different direction,” which led to his release.
Neronha ultimately stated, “There is no basis to consider him a person of interest any longer.”
In a Monday interview on “Good Morning America,” the attorney reiterated that a review of the gathered evidence indicated that the man should be set free.
Now, Providence officials are appealing to local residents and businesses to share any video footage that could assist in tracking the gunman’s movements.
The shooting occurred on Saturday around 4 p.m. within the Barus & Holley engineering building on campus. At that time, some of the injured were studying for their final exams. Reports indicate that the conditions of the injured students range from critical to stable.
Amid the investigation, police have been asking the public to remain vigilant and check their security cameras for any potentially relevant footage.
