Inmates takeover another NY prison day after Gov. deploys National Guard

Dozens of correctional facilities across New York state stopped visiting as personnel safety grew after another riot erupted within prisons in the north.

“All visits at DOCCS facilities will be cancelled until further notice,” the NYS Department of Corrections wrote in a post on its Facebook page.

The latest prison anxiety occurred around midnight at Riverview Correctional Facility on Thursday. According to a report from WWNY.

The outlet reported that the dormitories on the facility were under inmate control for several hours, where staff felt “unsafe.” However, the state told the outlet that corrections officers left their posts open and left their dorms unsupervised.

The outlet learned that as many as 500 prisoners were housed in 10 dormitories in Riverview after speaking to several sources. It was also determined that about 15-20 staff members had shifted overnight.

It was not clear why it led to the escalating tension between the prisoners and correctional officers, but it was determined that prison staff deemed it a condition and brought the staff back into the visitor's area.

Corrections officers could hear that inmates were breaking glass and damaging dorms, so staff left the visitor area and entered the prison administrative area where they felt safe. I said I could.

The facility returned completely to state control around 8am Thursday.

According to the outlet, staff at the correction facility were not injured during the trial.

The incident occurred at Collins Correctional Facility in Erie County around 1am on Feb. 12, when three dorms were taken over by prisoners and staff were removed.

On Wednesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said a valid presidential order from the New York National Guard to “continue illegal and illegal work halts by correctional officers while ensuring safety and security at correctional facilities.” I signed it.

The order also provides additional overtime compensation authority for corrections officers and other staff who are actively working to report duties and secure facilities.

New York also filed an injunction under Taylor Act, with the judge granting a temporary restraining order mandated by strike correction officers on Wednesday to halt illegal activities.

“These destructive and unlicensed work suspensions by some corrections officers endanger the safety of their colleagues, prison populations, and cause excessive fear in residents of surrounding communities, so if not finished It won't,” Gov. Hochur said.

“To resolve this illegal work suspension, I have directed the appointment of Martin Scheynman, a highly respected independent mediator. Modifications to thousands of people continuing to report their obligations. For the officials and staff, I would like to thank them for their continued service and for doing the right thing.”
