Instagram has rolled out several new features, and one of them has sparked concern among users, particularly regarding privacy.
The app’s new map feature allows individuals to share their real-time locations with followers.
With Location Sharing activated, your location updates every time you open the app to view updates from selected users.
According to Meta, Instagram’s parent company, this feature is intended as an easy way to connect. Location sharing is off by default unless users choose to turn it on, yet many remain apprehensive about potential safety issues.
One user mentioned, “This should help you ‘link’ faster,” while advising caution: “But to be safe, check the settings and ensure it’s turned off.”
Another user expressed discomfort, stating, “I actually hate this; there’s a real stalker here.”
A woman warned her peers, “As a woman, just turn it off,” hinting at the risks involved with this feature.
Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s Head, shared a clarification, explaining that location sharing is optional and can only be shared with a limited group of chosen individuals.
However, many commenters voiced their concerns. One user remarked, “My location was automatically shared with all my followers before this feature was introduced. That’s a huge security risk.”
Another echoed their frustration, saying, “This is the worst feature. You could have added something that’s much safer for us.”
Concerns continued, with one user stating, “It’s not safe, especially regarding tagging stories that can be seen on the map. Many of us tag places to stay safe; we don’t want anyone tracking us.”
Another mentioned a personal issue, saying, “I actually have a stomach problem!” with the features being a significant concern.
Meta has been contacted for further comment.
When Location Sharing is enabled, it updates every time you access the app or when it’s running in the background.
How to Check If Your Location Is Off on Instagram

Alongside the map feature, Instagram has introduced a report option, allowing users to share their favorite public posts and reels. These will then be suggested in the feeds of friends and followers, appearing in a separate tab in user profiles.
Additionally, a new “Friends” tab has been added to reels, showcasing content that friends engage with, whether they like, create, or comment on it.
