Investigation begins into manslaughter following unexpected death of Winter Olympic security guard

Investigation Launched After Security Guard’s Fatal Incident at Olympic Site

As the Winter Olympics comes to an end, authorities have initiated a manslaughter investigation following the unfortunate death of a security guard at a construction site.

Pietro Zantonini, aged 55, passed away from what appears to be a heart attack on January 8 during the night shift at the Olympic venue in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

An autopsy revealed that the heart attack was triggered by extreme cold, but prosecutors are now investigating if there were additional factors involved.

Reports indicate that Zantonini, who lived in the coastal city of Brindisi, was on duty near the Cortina Olympic Stadium when temperatures dropped to around 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

He started gasping for breath around 2 a.m., and unfortunately, he had already died by the time emergency responders arrived.

Investigators are considering “aggravating circumstances” that may have played a role in Zantonini’s death, including potentially dangerous working conditions. Italian media sources have pointed out that despite the freezing temperatures, he was equipped with only a small heater while working in a temporary enclosure.

Furthermore, it appears that Zantonini had expressed discontent with his working situation prior to his death. Reports suggest he was particularly worried about the long night shifts and inadequate protective measures on site.

In light of this incident, Italy’s Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini has called for a comprehensive investigation.

Notably, Simico, the agency tasked with overseeing Olympic infrastructure, stated that they were not responsible for the area where Zantonini’s death occurred.

The Winter Olympics began on February 6 and are set to conclude this Sunday, taking place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The International Olympic Committee has not yet provided a comment regarding the situation.
