Democratic Nominee for Iowa Governor Cultivates Moderate Image Amid Progressivism
In a highly competitive governor’s race, the Democratic candidate is focused on projecting a moderate persona, even though he has been attending a church known for its progressive stance on various social issues in Iowa.
Rob Sand, Iowa’s state auditor and the Democratic nominee, has been seen regularly at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Des Moines, according to local reports. This church has a history of championing progressive initiatives, including hosting drag performances, inviting a transgender pastor for a special service, and openly supporting abortion rights.
On the campaign trail, Sand often emphasizes his religious beliefs, citing Christianity and quoting scripture to connect with voters, including those who lean conservative. He describes himself as someone with independent views, mentioning past votes for Republicans and expressing a preference for collaboration with the GOP, suggesting that partisan politics can be “poison.”
One voter shared their thoughts, stating, “I am a Christian. I’m a conservative. But I’m not a party-based person. I prefer to vote for the individual rather than the party, and Rob seems genuine and relatable.”
However, Sand’s association with the Plymouth church presents a contrast to his moderate campaign image. The church openly embraces progressive beliefs, describing itself as an LGBTQ+ inclusive community for over three decades. Its website even showcases members participating in pride parades and states it does not interpret the Bible literally.
A spokesperson for Sand defended his church attendance, noting that, while he values his faith, he doesn’t agree with everything the church does. “Rob attends church regularly and considers his faith crucial. He may not align with every aspect, but he appreciates traditional worship,” they stated, referencing his independence in political thought. The spokesperson also made a pointed remark about his opponent, Zach Lahn, alluding to Lahn’s past as an investor in a company linked to sexual wellness products.
Sand has criticized Lahn for frequent flights to Kansas, implying they indicate a disconnect from the state he aims to govern. Lahn, countering this narrative, emphasizes his residency in Iowa and explains the flights stem from family obligations between the two states.
When asked where he attends church, Lahn’s campaign has yet to provide a response. Meanwhile, Plymouth’s reputation for progressive advocacy is notably tangible. In May 2025, the church hosted a controversial drag performer known for explicit lyrics, who tied together themes of sexuality and religion in their music.
The church has also engaged in activism, with its leaders expressing solidarity for LGBTQ+ issues through participation in protests and affirming support for abortion rights. In addition, Plymouth’s connections to educational initiatives include sexuality education programs beginning in elementary school.
One campaign representative from Lahn’s team expressed concern over Sand’s associations, stating, “This material is troubling and aligns with Rob’s liberal views. If one holds the belief that gender identity is fluid, it raises questions about the teachings directed at children.” The rhetoric serves to highlight the ideological divide between the two candidates as they vie for the governor’s seat in Iowa.
