Iran Confirms Death of IRGC Naval Commander in Israeli Airstrike
On Monday, Iran confirmed that an Israeli airstrike resulted in the death of Commander Alireza Tansiri, who led the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) naval unit. Israel holds Tansiri accountable for obstructing the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
According to the IRGC’s announcement via Sepa News, Commander Tansiri “succumbed to severe injuries” sustained during an attack last Thursday, as reported by AFP.
Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz later stated that Tansiri was indeed killed in the airstrike, labeling him as “directly responsible for terrorist activities,” particularly concerning the mining and blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, Benam Rezaei, who led the Revolutionary Guard’s Naval Intelligence Service, was killed in a related strike in the port city of Bandar Abbas.
The ongoing conflict has now entered its second month, during which Iran has effectively restricted access to this vital waterway, causing global energy prices to spike as nations brace for potential military responses.
A statement from the Revolutionary Guards mentioned that Tansiri was in the process of organizing defenses along the coast at the time of his removal, declaring an intention to “not rest until the enemy is completely destroyed,” as per AFP.
Tansiri had overseen the IRGC’s naval operations and frequently threatened to impose a total blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for commercial shipping. His threats to commercial vessels in the area have notably driven up global petroleum prices, particularly endangering supplies in East Asia.
Minister Katz warned the Iranian leadership, stating, “The IDF will hunt you down and eliminate you one by one.” He asserted that Israel would sustain its operations in Iran with full force to achieve its military objectives.
Tansiri’s death marks another high-profile loss for the Iranian government in this ongoing war. Speculation surrounds the whereabouts of General Hossein Salami, who has reportedly gone into hiding since the onset of the extensive U.S.-Israeli Operation Fury.
Salami, notorious for his aggressive rhetoric against Israel and the United States, had warned that “enemies of the Islamic State, particularly the criminal and terrorist Zionist group, should anticipate holy wrath and severe vengeance,” according to official reports.
It remains unclear where Salami is currently located.
