Iran capable of building nuclear bomb in one week, report finds as Middle East tensions flare

Iran monitoring groups say the country has enough weapons-grade uranium to build a nuclear weapon in just a week.

The Institute for Science and International Security published the findings in a report on Monday, saying Tehran could produce a total of six bombs a month.

“Instability in the region presents Iran with a unique opportunity and increasing domestic justification for building nuclear weapons, while the resources of the United States and Israel to detect Iran and prevent its success are limited. ,” the report states. “Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities are more dangerous than ever, and its relations with the West are at their worst.”

Iran could “produce enough weapons-grade enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon in a week using just a fraction of 60% enriched uranium,” the report continued. “If Iran takes steps to delay inspectors’ access, it may be difficult for inspectors to quickly detect this situation.”

Iran has steadily increased its enriched uranium production capacity in recent years. This material must be enriched to about 90% before it can be used in nuclear weapons. Iran has a large supply of 60% enriched uranium that it could quickly siphon and enrich further.
