Iran Confirms Elimination of IRGC Terror Leader Hossein Salami in Israel Strikes

Major General Hossein Salami Confirmed Killed in Israeli Air Strikes

On Friday morning, Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that air strikes targeting Israeli interests resulted in the death of Major General Hossein Salami, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

In addition to Salami, several other prominent figures within the Iranian regime were reportedly killed, including two nuclear scientists. There seems to be a suggestion that more high-ranking officials were also targeted, although Salami’s death is the only one officially confirmed by the Iranian government so far.

Salami had been a leading and formidable figure within Iran’s Islamic regime, frequently issuing threats against the United States and Israel. It’s interesting to note that just a day before, he declared that his forces were “tested and experienced in war” and ready to confront enemies.

The IRGC is classified as a terrorist organization by the US and functions as the formal arm of Iran’s military. It plays a crucial role in maintaining ties with Iranian-backed militant groups across the region, including the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

IRNA’s confirmation of Salami’s death was brief and didn’t delve into details about the incident. The agency stated that Salami was killed in Tehran, asserting that he was a victim of assassination. Additional reports indicated that the Israeli Air Force carried out multiple strikes, which included attacks on key targets within the capital.

Another Iranian media outlet, Press TV, earlier noted that there were several senior IRGC commanders and nuclear scientists among the casualties of the air strikes. Notably, two nuclear scientists, Mohammad Medi Tehlanchi and Ferreidun Abbasi, were mentioned as casualties of the attack. However, one military leader, identified as Bagheri, has reportedly survived and is coordinating Iran’s response.

Various reports from Iranian officials suggested that Israel also targeted the Natanz facility, which is vital for uranium enrichment. While Israel has not confirmed these operations, there are unverified reports hinting at potential interventions by Israeli intelligence.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the air strikes in a national address, framing the operation as a significant escalation. He emphasized that the operations would continue as necessary, describing Iran as a tangible threat to Israeli national security.

Salami was among the most influential military leaders in Iran, frequently boasting about potential attacks on Israel and celebrating actions taken by Iranian proxies, such as Hamas. His death could considerably weaken Iran’s military capabilities moving forward.

In his final comments, Salami had expressed readiness for any scenario, claiming that Iran had developed extensive military strategies and assessed enemy capabilities. His threats often escalated in response to reports indicating that Israel might be preparing for an attack.

Recently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported concerning advancements in Iranian nuclear capabilities, which may have further heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

In reaction to the IAEA’s criticisms, Iran’s atomic energy agency announced the establishment of another uranium enrichment facility. They shared plans to upgrade existing facilities with more advanced technology.

The Israeli air strikes occurred shortly before another round of nuclear negotiations between Iranian and US diplomats. Although the attacks transpired just before scheduled talks, it remains uncertain whether the discussions would proceed as planned.

Salami had a history of issuing stark warnings against both the US and Israel, often chiding them for their political strength, or lack thereof, and hinted at their impending downfall.
