Iran’s Military Threatens Response to U.S. Actions

Iran’s military has issued a stark warning of “sustained, effective and painful” attacks on U.S. bases and interests throughout the Middle East if the United States takes further military action against Iran. This comes as President Donald Trump signaled that “very big things” may soon unfold regarding Tehran.

The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which oversees Iran’s military operations, stated that any mistakes made by the U.S. could result in wide-ranging attacks targeting American interests in the region. There’s no limit or consideration, they warned.

Furthermore, countries that offer assistance to the United States for an attack would also be drawn into the conflict, according to the military command. They indicated that these nations “can no longer expect restraint or civility” from Iran’s armed forces.

This escalation of threats appears critical amid ongoing tensions in a conflict that has lasted nearly seven months. Trump is reportedly contemplating additional military actions against Iran but is also leaving the door open for potential diplomatic engagement as global leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a recent phone conversation, Trump mentioned that he is in “deciding mode” regarding Iran’s situation and hinted at significant developments on the horizon. He reflected on options ranging from completely dismantling Iran to allowing the country to deteriorate economically, or possibly reaching a more diplomatic solution.

Trump was quoted, asking rhetorically, “If and when do I blow the entire nation up?” emphasizing that he expects certain behavior from Iran moving forward.

On Iran’s side, military leadership claimed to have information suggesting that Washington may be gearing up for another strike, allegedly following discussions held in Europe with some allied nations. However, they did not specify the basis for this assessment.

Iranian officials have been increasingly vocal lately about the likelihood of renewed hostilities. Mohsen Rezaei, in a recent statement, suggested that an American strike is very possible. He also expressed that Iran is ready for what he termed a “decisive war.” Alongside this, he indicated that Qatar has communicated Iran’s conditions for renewed negotiations to Washington, which include ending the war on all fronts and releasing frozen funds.

Rezaei specified that Iran’s preconditions for dialogue also involve ceasing the naval blockade. In a similar vein, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that military pressure and negotiations should be viewed as complementary, indicating that Iran would only re-engage with prior frameworks when its demands are met and its rights respected.

As the U.S. continues to apply economic pressure on Iran, Washington has been facilitating commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while CENTCOM confirmed that American forces have redirected numerous vessels for compliance with ongoing embargoes on Iranian exports.

This situation is further complicated by rising tensions in the region, notably with Iran-backed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. The State Department has cautioned that there is potential for further escalations in the Middle East following these escalatory tactics, which include missile launches aimed at Riyadh.

Amidst all this, Trump mentioned that the U.S. maintains constant communication with the Houthis, asserting that the group has agreed not to engage in hostilities against the United States.

The approaching United Nations General Assembly in New York might provide an opportunity for dialogue, even as threats continue to escalate between Washington and Tehran. When asked about the possibility of meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the gathering, Trump expressed a willingness to do so.

While Pezeshkian is expected to participate in the General Assembly, Trump is also set to meet leaders from Gulf Cooperation Council states, where Iran will likely be a significant topic of discussion. However, Trump has not made it clear which path he plans to choose moving forward.
